Frances Margaret MacAskill

The family of Frances Margaret MacAskill of New Waterford, are saddened to announce her passing on January 29, 2024 at the age of 81 years. 

She will be lovingly remembered by her children; Peg, Ontario, Rick, Glace Bay, Nancy and Dave, PEI, Susan and Lewis, Sask., Eileen and Gary, Sandy, and Sara, all of Glace Bay, 11 grandchildren, and 12 great-grandchildren, siblings; Sadie, Bridgewater and Robert, Ontario.

Frances was predeceased by her parents Laura Jane and Alex MacAskill, brothers; Tommy, Ronnie and George all of Ontario, sisters; Donna, Mira and Jane Ann. 

Ma was a devoted homemaker to seven children. Ma would always put others first and be the first to please others. She loved music and to dance whenever the opportunity arose. Her favorite local band was Kelly’s Brew. Ma enjoyed reading especially the Cape Breton Post. Her favorite part was reading to others their horoscopes, and doing crossword puzzles.

Her favorite tv shows, Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy and was really good at playing. She enjoyed Bingo as well as her favorite beer, Keith's.  Frances loved to have visitors, special events where she was a proud mother to attend graduations and was proud of her grandchildren and now great-grandchildren.  She loved to bake, we all loved her bread, pies and bonnach bread.  A fond memory was how some of us needed to guard the bread so there was some left!

Ma would always make sure we were always warm. Fondest memory was keeping warm, our feet in the open oven door! As well as the best toast ever on top of hanger on the stove element.  Ma loved playing cards, scat, crazy 8s, crib, solitaire, auction 45, and a shared fond memory of playing the game of Trouble. Ma would love the game of chase and loved to catch up to you. Another fond memory was keeping her Christmas tree up till February so her daughter could see. 

Our proudest moment is when Ma finally, after not believing she could, walking with her walker towards us.  That is Our Cape Breton Ma!! Till we meet again. 

Cremation has taken place under the guidance of Forest Haven Memorial Gardens, with a Graveside service to be held in the Mount Carmel cemetery in New Waterford on Saturday, May 25th, 2024 at 11am with Father Godwin Obike officiating. Reception to follow at 3 Reidville Street, Glace Bay.
