It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Illona Sandre Young (Briggs), who departed this world peacefully on Thursday, November 21, 2024, at the age of 85 surrounded by her loving family members. Illona was predeceased by her beloved parents, Cecelia Briggs (Barrow) and Arthur Briggs; her brothers, William Briggs and Sonny (Arthur) Briggs; and her cherished son, Eric Stephen Young.
Illona is survived by her devoted husband of 64 years, Herbert “Bull” Henry Young, with whom she shared a lifetime of love, partnership, and adventure. She leaves behind her loving daughter, Lesley Clute (Young); her treasured granddaughters, Ashley (Ty) Clute and Brooke (Coleton) Clute; and her brothers, Eric Briggs and Gene Briggs. Illona also touched the lives of countless other relatives and friends who will forever cherish her memory.
Born and raised in Donkin, Nova Scotia, Illona held a lifelong affection for the natural beauty of her hometown. She adored the stunning ocean views and found joy in berry-picking along the shore. Her roots in Donkin shaped her deep appreciation for nature and community.
After graduating from St. Joseph’s Hospital as a Registered Nurse in 1959, Illona married Herbert in 1960, beginning a remarkable journey together. In 1964, they relocated to Ontario, where Illona excelled in her nursing career while raising her family. Her warmth and dedication were evident in her work, and her kind heart left a lasting impression on all who knew her.
Illona had a passion for travel, exploring Europe, the Caribbean, and beyond with her family and friends. In 2000, Illona retired from her nursing career, and in 2008, she and Bull returned to Nova Scotia, settling in Glacé Bay to enjoy their golden years surrounded by loved ones. They lived with their daughter LesleyAnn and granddaughters Ashley and Brooke, a decision that enriched their lives in countless ways. Their home became a haven of love, laughter, and shared experiences, where Illona formed an unbreakable bond with her granddaughters and continued to enrich her bond with her daughter, offering them wisdom, encouragement, and a steady presence of unconditional love. Whether sharing stories, cooking meals, shopping, or enjoying the simple pleasures of daily life, the family created treasured memories that deepened their connection. Illona's nurturing spirit and warm-hearted nature left a lasting imprint on her family, building a foundation of love that will endure for generations.
Illona will be remembered as a kind, adventurous, and generous soul who radiated love and compassion. Her unwavering positivity and boundless care for others were gifts to all who had the privilege of knowing her.
In accordance with Illona’s wishes, no formal service will be held. Her family asks that you honor her memory by celebrating life, cherishing loved ones, and spreading kindness in her name.
Illona’s memory will forever live on in the hearts of her family, friends, and all those she touched during her incredible journey. She will be dearly missed but never forgotten.
