My Mom Julie died peacefully of natural causes on Tuesday, October 10, 2023 at Victoria Haven where she had been a resident. She was born in Poland, in the Ukrainian village of Krasna to John Zwarun and Mary (Eleniak). At age 10 she immigrated with her mother and two sisters to Glace Bay, Nova Scotia, to join her father who was working in the coal mines.
Julie was a generous, sociable lady, likely remembered as an impeccable seamstress, or as a clerk at Rosenblum’s Ladies Wear. Her hands were never idle, but busy with baking, preserving, gardening and embroidery.
Julie is survived by a daughter, Donna, and by siblings Stephanie, Stephen and Frederick, all of Glace Bay, and Celia (Roger) of Repentigny , QC.
She was predeceased in 2004 by her husband of 53 years, Tony (Anthony).
Also predeceasing her were siblings Millie, William, Peter, John and Michael, and a daughter Annette (Jacques).
Cremation has taken place under the care of Forest Haven Memorial Gardens. A memorial and internment will take place at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the charity of your choice.
Heartfelt thanks and appreciation to the lovely staff of Victoria Haven who were there for my Mom when I couldn’t be. You are angels.
Do not stand
By my grave, and weep.
I am not there,
I do not sleep—
I am the thousand winds that blow
I am the diamond glints in snow
I am the sunlight on ripened grain,
I am the gentle, autumn rain.
As you awake with morning’s hush,
I am the swift, up-flinging rush
Of quiet birds in circling flight,
I am the day transcending night.
Do not stand
By my grave, and cry—
I am not there,
I did not die.
