Leanne Flynn was a bright light in a world that was sometimes dark and she will be deeply missed by all who were fortunate enough to know her. She is remembered for her sharpness, style, quick wit, and deep sense of compassion.
A proud Cape Bretoner, Leanne was known by many names; Lee, Leebee, Ms. Flynn, to share a few. She was a strong older sister to her five siblings, a teacher, a writer, a gardener, and a caring member of her community. It would be wrong to say that Leanne lost her battle with cancer as she never stopped fighting. Though her journey was quiet and marked by moments of struggle, her strength and spirit remained constant.
Leanne was a gifted writer, a lover of English literature, and a true creative. Born on December 5,1970, in New Waterford, Nova Scotia, Leanne Florence Flynn cherished her roots and held dear the memories made during summers in Chimney Corner. After completing a Bachelor of Arts at Cape Breton University, Leanne pursued a Bachelor of Education from Western University and went on to have a rich, impactful career teaching highschool English in Ontario. Later in life Leanne took up writing and editing as her full time career.
In tune with nature, Leanne found delight in gardening and it was something that she devoted much of her time to. She created an outdoor oasis in her personal garden and brought her passion for flowers and gardening everywhere she went. With a flair for fashion, Leanne always expressed her authentic self and encouraged others to do the same. Leanne was generous with her love; often after a conversation with her, you left feeling a little more self assured and cared for. No matter the obstacles she faced, Leanne always found time for others, offering them her full attention. She cared deeply and was always ready to listen, discuss and offer some well placed humour.
Leanne loved her family, friends, and her many nieces and nephews. She is survived by her parents Melin and Aileen Flynn, and her siblings Timmy (Amanda), Ryan, Maureen, Colleen (Gary), and Blaire (Steve). She held a special place in her heart for her dear friend, John Bury. She passed away peacefully surrounded by family on June 28th, 2023. Leanne’s family extend their heartfelt thank you to the doctors and nurses of the palliative care unit at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital.
Cremation has taken place and donations can be made in Leanne’s memory to the Every Woman's Centre or the Community Homeless Shelter.
Leanne’s kindness knew no bounds. She was moved by moments of humanity that unfolded around her.
In her memory, lead with kindness, help others and seek out the beauty that exists in plain sight.
