It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Marcena Boutilier at the age of 69. A devoted wife, mother, sister, and friend, Marcena touched the lives of everyone who knew her with her unwavering kindness and compassion.

Marcena was married to her beloved husband, Wilson Boutilier, for 45 years. Together, they raised two daughters, Dorothy Boutilier and Vicky McMullin. Dorothy is the proud stepmother of two children, Noah and Chelsea, and a grandchild, Mila, while Vicky and her husband, Joseph McMullin, share two sons, Ryan, and Liam. Marcena’s family also includes her seven sisters—Donna (William) Dunphy, Wanda MacKinnon, Kathleen (Allan James) MacDonald, Jacquline (Archibald) Timmons, Annaleta (William) MacKinnon, Debby (Eldon) Timmons, and Juanita MacKinnon—who cherished their bond deeply.

Marcena grew up with an unbreakable bond with cousins who were like extended sisters, forming lifelong connections that shaped her caring nature. One of which was her childhood best friend, Josephine, with whom she shared countless adventures and memories. Marcena grew up with a sense of community and love that enriched her life, fostering her innate kindness and compassion for those around her.

Family meant everything to Marcena, and no matter where life took her, Marcena was always there for those in need, ensuring her home remained a place where love and kindness flowed freely. Her love and support extended not only to her own family but also to the families of others, creating a safe haven for children in her home. With a caring spirit and an unwavering willingness to help those in need, she offered understanding and guidance to everyone who crossed her path.

Marcena also brought warmth and laughter to family gatherings with her love of cards and board games. Known for her playful stubbornness, she would often threaten to take her “Scattergories and go home” if things did not go her way. She also treasured her weekly visits with her dear friend Faye, sharing treats and crossword puzzles together.

The family wishes to express their heartfelt gratitude to everyone at Palliative Care and Hospice Cape Breton for their kindness, support, and laughter during this challenging time. Your compassion has made an immeasurable difference, and we can never fully express our appreciation for all you have done.

As we remember Marcena, we celebrate her incredible heart and the many lives she enriched. She will be deeply missed but will live on in the love and memories she created. Marcena’s legacy of love and compassion lives on through the family and friendships she so deeply valued. Marcena was predeceased by her parents, four siblings and one grandson lost in infancy.

A private service will be held for close family and friends that will be announced at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Palliative Care Society of Cape Breton.
