Mary Gillis

It is with broken hearts, we announce the peaceful passing of Mary (Sutherland) Gillis, age 71, at home
on September 10, 2020 after a lengthy illness. Beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend;
Mary is survived by her husband of 49 years, Wayne, son Colin (Vicki), grandchildren Jack and Hunter,
Edmonton, AB and special daughter/granddaughter, Jessica Gillis, New Waterford. Born in New
Waterford on Dec 29, 1948, Mary was the daughter of the late Buddy and Kaye Sutherland. She is
survived by brothers, Joe (Yvonne), Kitchener, ON; Neil (Bonnie), Calgary, AB; Pat (Jane), Goderich, ON
and Francis (Stephanie), Sydney Mines, NS; sisters, Yvonne (John) Donovan, New Waterford:
Cathy(John) Fitzgerald, Windsor, NS and sister-in-law Debbie Sutherland, New Waterford.
Also surviving, are brother-in-law Bobby (Susie) Gillis, ON, sister-in-law's Cathy (Fabe) Sudworth, Sherry McKenzie, Rose MacPherson (the late Brian), New Waterford and Angela
(Frankie) MacKinnon, New Victoria. Besides her parents, Mary was predeceased by son Robert,
daughter Andrea, brother Jimmy and in-laws Angus and Sophie Gillis. A graduate of NWCH as an LPN, Mary worked for many years at Holy Redeemer Convent, Sydney and later with the VON Cape Breton. Mary cherished her many former patient during her time as LPN, becoming long lasting friends over the years. She was well known for her love of Celtic Music and travelled to musical events around the island with travelling companions Yvonne, Debbie and special Aunt, Anne Mackenzie. Special thanks to Mary's lifelong friend, Ann Head for always being there for her. The family would also like to thank the VON, Palliative Care, Dr. Obadan, Sydney and Mary's friends and neighbours for all their assistance.
Cremation has taken place and a funeral mass will be held Thursday September 17 at 10am at St. Leonard's Parish.
