It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Mary Catherine McPhee-Canova after
a brief illness. Born in Glace Bay, she was the daughter of the late Norman and Mary K (Gouthro) Mackie.
She was a faithful member of St. Eugene’s parish and longstanding member of the St. Eugene’s
CWL.
Mary touched the lives of many children over the years in her role as a caregiver and
devoted much of her time to enriching the lives of her friends, family and community. She
donated generously of her time and resources to ensure she left the world in a better place.
Mary loved to entertain and was never happier than when surrounded by friends, family, and a
70’s playlist. She cherished the joy and laughter of the times spent with best friend Linda Ward
and the infamous Sunflower Sisters (Janine, Wendy, Brenda and Elaine).
Mary is survived by her loving husband of 36 years Frank Canova; children Chris McPhee, Lynn
(Danny) Williams, Cory (Kerri) McPhee; step children Vanessa (Frank) Canova, Maria (Justin)
Arsenault and Angelo (Jillian) Canova; her adored grandchildren, Darren, Michael (Alyssa),
Sara, Anthony (Ivy), Nicholas, Allison (Connor), Jasmine, MaryLynn, Colten, Julian, Callie and
Lucas as well as great-grandchildren Hayden and Aryanna; siblings Joan Mackie, Frank
Mackie, Fred (Helen) Mackie, Wanda (Charles) Krawchuk, Kathie (Chris) Mackie, Kim (John)
Mackie, brother in law Sheldon (Maurina) Canova and Paul (Margie) Canova; many nieces and
nephews.
Along with her parents, Mary was predeceased by husband Michael McPhee and daughter in
infancy, Ida Francine.
A graveside service will be held at 1:30 on Friday January 6, 2023 at St. James Cemetery in Gardiner Mines
with a Celebration of Life to follow at the Gardiner Mines Community Hall from 2-4pm.
We would like to thank all of the people involved in Mary’s care, especially Dr. Stephanie
Ellerker and the wonderful staff of the Cape Breton Regional Hospital Palliative Care and
Hospice Cape Breton.
