Sheldon Francis Murphy passed away peacefully with his son by his side on September 16, 2024. Born in Sydney Mines on October 17, 1941, he was the only child of the late Joseph and Violet (MacLean) Murphy. Left to mourn his loss are his four children: Shannon (Francis), Amber, Erin (Verna), and Hali (Mark); four granddaughters: Ashley (Graham), Candace, Janelle (Coady), and Lily; and four great grandchildren: Blake, Carlie, Bridget and Lachlan.
In his youth, Sheldon pursued his talent for art at Saint Mary’s University in Halifax, dreaming of a career as an art teacher. However, as life often does, his path shifted, bringing him back to his roots in Sydney Mines. He first helped run the family’s tavern, “The Shamrock,” before dedicating many years as a foreman at the Sydney Steel Corporation. His family can’t remember him ever missing a shift. Though Sheldon wasn’t typically one for material possessions, he took immense pride in his Cadillac keeping it immaculate at all times.
Sheldon was a storyteller at heart, happiest when sharing memories, spending time at the race track, playing cards, or enjoying a good scoff. His love for conversation and laughter will be sorely missed.
Sheldon’s absence will be most deeply felt by his son Erin, with whom he lived for the past 15 years and by Verna Yorke, whose exceptional care provided him with great comfort and dignity.
In accordance with Sheldon’s wishes, cremation has taken place; there will be no visitation at this time. A private family service will take place at a later date.
