It is with great sadness we announce the sudden passing of William H. Merritt at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital on January 21, 2025 after a brief but courageous battle with cancer. Born August 28, 1936 in Sydney Mines, Bill was the son of the late Hillary and Adele(Poirier) Merritt.
Bill retired from the NSLC as manager of the Sydney Mines store. An avid sportsman, he loved playing ball with the Sydney Mines Ramblers in his younger years. Later in life he enjoyed golfing with friends at Seaview Golf Club in North Sydney. He made many friends and was well liked by his neighbors at the seniors complex, Pitt Street Sydney Mines especially "Moose", his partner in crime.
Bill is survived by his sister Delores Tobin, Ontario and by numerous nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, Bill was predeceased by his wife and the love of his life Emma (Burchell) Merritt, brother Kelvin Merritt, sisters Elaine Cole, Enid Williams, Bernadette Merritt, Geraldine Kerbs, Jacqueline Armstrong, and Pauline Monahan.
We would like to thank Dr. Miller and the staff at the CBRH for their care and compassion for Bill. A special thanks to Maureen MacTaggart for her devoted friendship and care in his final days
Cremation has taken place. As per Bill's wishes, there will be no service or visitation. A private family committal at a later date. Rest in peace Billy.
